The idea for The Brass Monkey Club came about to highlight Chester West and Chester Councils plans to implement a Public Space Protection Order and their request for feedback from locals.
When we read through the proposals, somethings didn’t make sense, like fining the homeless for lying down or falling asleep and stopping people feeding the ducks on the canal.
We felt the PSPO would be used criminalise anything the council didn’t like and to discourage people, the council felt undesirable, from going to Chester.
That, we believe was just plain wrong, so we decided to put up some bench plaques in the city centre to highlight those issues. Those plaques receive incredible coverage, and were reported right around the world.
Since then, we have been contacted by many people who have made suggestions and offered help in placing the plaques. We have never even met most of them so they are actually anonymous to us!
So at best, The Brass Monkeys are an ad hoc group of artist/activists, who try and raise issues local and national through the medium of bench plaques.
We are trying to light-heartedly raise attention to important issues. Some of our plaques are just meant to be funny rather than have a poke at someone and we think nowhere is safe from The Brass Monkey Club.
There are currently plans in the pipeline for more plaques at new locations and we will be going international soon so keep checking the website.
